Nigerian Security Forces Shut Down Illegal Mining Site in Kaduna State

NSCDC calls for rapid implementation of Safe Schools Initiative

In a significant step towards curbing illegal mining activities, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has successfully shut down an unauthorised mining site in the Damau community, located in the Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State. This decisive move is part of a broader effort to restore order and boost investor confidence in Nigeria’s troubled solid minerals sector.

According to CSC Afolabi Babawale, the National Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, the decision to close the site was made in response to a directive from the Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi. The Commandant General had ordered the development of an effective strategy to tackle insecurity, vandalism of public utilities, and acts of economic sabotage across the country. The NSCDC’s actions are aimed at addressing these challenges and creating a more stable environment for legitimate mining operations.

The targeted site, which is rich in tin, had been overrun by unauthorized miners for several months. The illegal activities had resulted in substantial economic losses, environmental degradation, and growing insecurity in the area. In a strategic move, the NSCDC mining marshals employed a community engagement strategy, working with traditional leaders and local youths to peacefully resolve the situation. The miners vacated the site without resistance, under the supervision of NSCDC officials.

The diplomatic approach used by the NSCDC has been praised by local stakeholders, who have pledged their support for the initiative. The activities of illegal miners had been described as a serious threat to human lives, livelihoods, and investment in the area. A local official expressed relief at the intervention, stating that it had brought a long-awaited respite to the community.

The successful shutdown of the illegal mining site marks a significant step forward in the NSCDC’s efforts to tackle the complex issues surrounding mining in Nigeria. By working with local communities and employing non-kinetic methods, the NSCDC is demonstrating a commitment to finding peaceful solutions to complex problems. As the country seeks to develop its solid minerals sector, the NSCDC’s actions will play a critical role in creating a stable and secure environment for legitimate mining operations to thrive.
