In a significant move, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested and detained Martins Otse, a popular social media influencer known as VeryDarkMan or VDM. The reason behind his detention is his failure to honor several invitations extended to him by the commission. According to Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Otse was invited for questioning over allegations of financial malfeasance and a series of petitions bordering on alleged financial crimes.
The EFCC has urged the public to refrain from speculating about the agency’s motives and allow it to carry out its constitutional duties without interference. “The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favor,” Oyewale emphasized. “As soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed.” He also clarified that Otse’s arrest was not motivated by his previous public criticisms of the EFCC, stating that while such conduct is condemnable, it was not the reason for his detention.
Oyewale explained that the EFCC had acted within the law by detaining Otse, obtaining a valid remand order to keep him in custody while investigations continue. “The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the commission,” he said. Otse has been offered administrative bail and will regain his freedom upon meeting the bail conditions.
The EFCC’s move to detain Otse is a clear indication of its commitment to investigating financial crimes and holding individuals accountable for their actions. The commission’s spokesperson reassured the public that the agency will follow due process and ensure that justice is served. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen what charges Otse will face and how the case will proceed. For now, the EFCC remains focused on completing its investigation and ensuring that those responsible for financial crimes are brought to justice.
