Ukraine Attacks Moscow with Drones as Chinese President Xi Jinping Arrives for WWII Victory Day

Ukrainian drone attack disrupts Chinese President Xi’s visit

A significant escalation in tensions between Ukraine and Russia unfolded on Wednesday as Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow for the third consecutive day. The attacks prompted the closure of most of the Russian capital’s airports, coinciding with the scheduled arrival of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi’s visit is intended to commemorate the victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, a historically significant event that holds great importance for Russia.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Russian air defense units successfully destroyed at least 14 Ukrainian drones between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. The disruption caused by the drone attacks led to the closure of Moscow’s key airports for most of the night, with Russian national carrier Aeroflot announcing adjustments to its timetables to mitigate the impact of the disruptions.

The Kremlin has announced that a notable gathering of world leaders, including Xi, is expected to take place in Moscow over the coming days. This event, marking the World War Two Victory Day commemorations, will feature military units from 13 countries, including China. Xi’s four-day visit to Russia, commencing on Wednesday, is poised to provide a crucial diplomatic boost to President Vladimir Putin. This development is particularly significant as Russia seeks to demonstrate its global influence and counter perceptions of isolation.

Xi’s visit also underscores the strengthening strategic partnership between China and Russia, with numerous agreements expected to be signed. China has consistently been Russia’s largest trading partner, with their relationship characterized as having “no limits.” The context of this partnership is also marked by China’s ongoing tariff war with the United States, highlighting the complex geopolitical landscape.

The historical significance of World War Two for Russia cannot be overstated. The Soviet Union suffered immense losses, with 27 million casualties, including millions in Ukraine. However, the Soviet forces ultimately played a crucial role in defeating Nazi Germany, culminating in the iconic raising of the Soviet Victory Banner over the Reichstag in Berlin in 1945. For Russians and many in the former Soviet Union, May 9 is a sacred date, symbolizing victory and national pride. President Putin has sought to leverage these historical sentiments to foster unity within Russian society, particularly in response to what he perceives as Western attempts to diminish the Soviet achievement in World War Two.
