Pope Leo XIV Calls for Unity and Peace in First Public Address

The world needs his light - Pope Leo XIV declares in his first speech

Newly elected Pope Leo XIV has made a powerful call for unity, peace, and a renewed sense of faith in his first public address as Pontiff. Speaking from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pope emphasized the importance of coming together, invoking the memory of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday. Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, highlighted bridge-building, dialogue, and inclusivity as the central pillars of his papacy.

The Pope’s message was one of hope and unity, as he urged the faithful to hold in their hearts the legacy of Pope Francis, who had blessed the city of Rome and the entire world. He continued, “God loves us. God loves everyone. Evil will not prevail. We are all in the hands of God. Therefore, without fear, and united, hand in hand with God and with one another, let us move forward together.” Pope Leo XIV also underscored the need for humanity to come together, stating, “We are the disciples of Christ, and Christ goes before us. The world needs His light. Humanity needs Him as the bridge to God and His boundless love.”

Pope Leo XIV’s address emphasized the importance of working together to build bridges through dialogue and encounter, striving for a world where people can live in peace. He expressed his gratitude to the Cardinals who had chosen him as the successor of Peter and to the faithful who had supported him throughout his journey. The Pope also recalled the words of Saint Augustine, “With you, I am a Christian; for you, I am a bishop,” and invited the faithful to journey together towards a home prepared by God.
