As the July 12 Lagos State Local Government Election approaches, a prominent group, Afenifere Innovative Group, has issued a timely appeal to political leaders and their supporters to refrain from violence before, during, and after the election. This call to action was made by the spokesperson of the group’s Yaba Branch, Mr. Suleiman Mustapha, in a statement released on Friday in Lagos.
The need for a peaceful election was a key takeaway from the group’s interactive session and sensitization program held on Thursday. Mustapha emphasized that the growing disunity within the local All Progressive Congress (APC) leadership in the state, particularly in Lagos Mainland and Yaba LCDA, has created tension and hindered the delivery of democratic benefits to the communities. He urged the youth in these areas to actively participate in the democratic process and avoid any actions that could undermine it.
Mustapha specifically cautioned against violence instigated by elements within the local leadership, stating, “We call on our youths to embrace peace and avoid violence, especially acts being instigated by elements within the local leadership. A divided leadership is detrimental to progress, and we must work together to restore unity and purpose.” The group is committed to reinforcing unity and encouraging compliance with party directives, recognizing the importance of a unified front in achieving progress.
In a show of support for the APC, Mustapha commended the party’s empowerment programs aimed at young people. He also endorsed the party’s decision to adopt indirect primaries for its upcoming primaries, saying, “This method is a step in the right direction. It will help curb bloodshed and reduce the atmosphere of fear among party members.” By adopting this approach, the APC demonstrates its commitment to peaceful engagement and the well-being of its members.
