JAMB Releases 2025 UTME Results with Over 1.94 Million Candidates Scoring Less Than 200

Nigeria’s 2025 UTME Results Released: A Look into the Numbers

In a significant development for Nigeria’s education sector, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the release of results for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This year, over 1.94 million candidates sat for the computer-based examination, which took place between April 24 and May 5. Candidates can now check their results by sending a simple SMS with their registration number to designated numbers.

The UTME is a crucial annual entrance examination for students seeking admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. However, the latest results have revealed a concerning trend. According to JAMB, about 78% of candidates scored less than 200 out of the 400 obtainable points. Only 0.63% (12,421 candidates) achieved scores of 300 and above, while a staggering 24,535 candidates scored less than 100 marks.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, has addressed public concerns about the results, stating that they are consistent with the trend of the past decade. "This is not peculiar to this year. The performance statistics are consistent with those of the last 12 years," he emphasized. Despite the poor performance, Professor Oloyede’s comments aim to reassure the public that the results are not unusual and align with historical patterns.

The examination board also reported on underage, absentee, and malpractice cases. Notably, 40,247 underage candidates were permitted to take part in the examinations as ‘exceptional candidates,’ but only 467 (1.16%) achieved scores that meet the threshold for exceptional ability. Additionally, 71,701 candidates were absent from the examination, while 2,185 candidates are under investigation for various infractions, and 97 have been found to have engaged in examination malpractice. The results of candidates flagged for malpractice or still under investigation will be withheld pending the conclusion of review processes.

As the education sector in Nigeria continues to evolve, these results highlight the need for continued efforts to improve student performance and address the challenges faced by candidates. With the UTME playing a critical role in determining admission into higher education institutions, it is essential for stakeholders to work together to enhance the quality of education and support students in achieving their academic goals.
