Nigeria is set to invest a substantial N73.9 billion in the reconstruction and expansion of the Maraba-Keffi road project. The government has assigned a 13-month completion deadline, with the project expected to be finished by June 2026. The contract for this significant infrastructure development was awarded to China Harbour Engineering Company, a renowned international construction firm.
During an inspection of the ongoing expansion of the Abuja-Keffi expressway, Minister of State for Works Bello Goronyo commended President Bola Tinubu for his role in bringing the project to fruition. Goronyo emphasized the critical nature of the road, which spans multiple states, highlighting its importance for both local and national economic growth. He noted that the completion of the road will significantly alleviate transportation challenges in the region.
The minister announced that the government has made notable progress, having already completed the road from Keffi to Makurdi. Additionally, the section from Mararaba to Keffi is currently under construction, with work on the Makurdi to Enugu stretch also underway. The project’s overall completion is anticipated by June next year, which will facilitate the movement of goods and services, reducing travel times and yielding numerous economic benefits.
Goronyo revealed that the contract was awarded in June 2023 with a 30-month completion period. Construction commenced in December last year, and the project has already achieved 42% completion. The ministry is awaiting a certificate from the contractor to release additional funds for the project. Furthermore, plans are in place to expand the road’s lanes, enhancing the travel experience for Nigerians.
Ronald Liao, Commercial Manager of China Harbour Engineering Company, expressed confidence that the project would reach a 56% benchmark by the end of the month. However, he cited heavy traffic on the corridor as a significant challenge, necessitating nighttime construction. Despite this hurdle, Liao assured that with the support of the ministry, the project would be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
The reconstruction and expansion of the Maraba-Keffi road project underscore the government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s infrastructure and fostering economic growth. As the project progresses, it is expected to have a positive impact on the region, enhancing connectivity and facilitating the movement of goods and services. With the government’s dedication to seeing the project through to completion, Nigerians can look forward to improved transportation networks and the attendant economic benefits.
