In a show of appreciation for their unwavering dedication, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, commended the troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA for their bravery in combating security challenges in Nigeria’s North-west region. This commendation was made during a strategic Civil-Military Cooperation interactive session at the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto, where Gen. Musa was represented by Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole.
Gen. Musa emphasized the importance of discipline and vigilance among the troops, urging them to remain committed to civil-military cooperation and adhere to stipulated regulations at all times. He also praised the operational achievements of the 8 Division under Operation FASAN YAMMA, expressing satisfaction with the consistent weekly reports submitted to the Headquarters. “The battle is a just one, don’t sleep, because your enemies are not sleeping,” he cautioned, highlighting the ongoing nature of the conflict.
The Chief of Defence Staff further emphasized the need for unity among security services and a strong bond with host communities, stressing that victory against insurgency and banditry depends on both military strength and the trust of civilians. “Let people run to you, not away from you. The best intelligence comes from the civilians you protect,” he added, underscoring the importance of community support in the fight against insecurity.
Maj. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, the General Officer Commanding the 8 Division, expressed gratitude for the recognition, which affirmed the Division’s people-focused strategy. He reiterated that real success in asymmetric warfare lies not only in tactical gains but also in winning the hearts and minds of the people. Maj. Gen. Ajose highlighted the moral weight of their mission, emphasizing that protecting the vulnerable must be done with empathy, discipline, and justice. “We are not from the sky. We have children, siblings, relatives, and we pray that all of you return home safely, not in coffins,” he said, appealing for the safe return of the troops.
The event included a sensitization lecture on human rights, gender-based violence, and military ethics to deepen professionalism and discipline within the ranks. Other activities, such as medical outreach, sporting competitions, and media engagements, were also conducted to strengthen ties between the troops and host communities. The message was clear: unity, discipline, and community support are key to overcoming the security challenges facing the region. As Maj. Gen. Ajose aptly put it, “Nigeria remains one. The bandits will not win. And our Armed Forces will not sleep.”
