Nigeria Destroys Large Quantity of Substandard Imported Products

SON destroys large consignment of substandard imported products

In a bold move to protect public health and safety, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has taken decisive action against substandard imported products. A large quantity of these goods, including tyres, electrical cables, steel doors, and spark plugs, were destroyed after failing to meet the country’s minimum safety and quality standards. This action is part of the agency’s mandate to regulate and enforce standards for goods in the Nigerian market, as outlined in the SON Act No. 14 of 2015.

According to Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, the destruction of these substandard products is a necessary step to prevent them from causing harm to consumers. “As an agency, we take our responsibility seriously, and today’s action is a clear demonstration of our resolve to rid the market of dangerous, unregulated goods,” he emphasized. This move serves as a firm reminder to all stakeholders, including producers and consumers, that the SON will not tolerate substandard goods in Nigeria.

One of the key areas of concern highlighted by Dr. Okeke is the danger posed by expired tyres on Nigerian roads. Tyres, he noted, have a lifespan of four years, after which they can easily burst and cause fatal accidents. Furthermore, improper storage and exposure to extreme temperatures can also significantly impact tyre quality, making them even more hazardous. The Director-General urged consumers to be vigilant and report any suspected substandard products to the nearest SON office or through the agency’s toll-free number.

The SON’s action is a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerian consumers. By taking a firm stance against substandard products, the agency is helping to prevent accidents and protect lives. As the agency continues to work towards regulating and enforcing standards for goods in the Nigerian market, consumers can expect a safer and more reliable marketplace. The destruction of these substandard products serves as a warning to manufacturers and importers to adhere to the country’s safety and quality standards, and to prioritize the safety and well-being of consumers.
