Niger State Government Disburses N822 Million for Ward Development Projects Across 274 Wards

Niger govt allocates N822m to 274 wards for local projects

In a significant move to empower local communities, the Niger State government has disbursed N822,000,000 million to 274 wards across its three senatorial zones. This substantial investment is aimed at implementing Ward Development Projects, which are designed to address the unique needs and priorities of each community.

According to Phallalu Bako Mohammed, Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, each ward has been allocated N3 million to execute projects that have been identified and driven by community leaders and residents. This approach ensures that the projects are tailored to the specific requirements of each area, rather than being imposed from above. Mohammed made this announcement during a sensitization tour of key traditional Emirate Councils in Suleja, Lapai, and Agaie, where he engaged with traditional leaders and local stakeholders to discuss the project’s objectives and implementation strategy.

The Ward Development Project is built around the principle of community ownership and participation. The State Steering Committee, led by Mohammed, will establish Ward and Local Government Development Committees comprising representatives from traditional, religious, political, and civil society groups. These committees will be responsible for managing funds and supervising project execution, ensuring that the projects are implemented in a transparent and accountable manner.

The Emirs of Lapai, Agaie, and Suleja have commended Governor Umaru Bago for reviving the ward development model, recognizing that true progress begins at the community level. They have urged local leaders to ensure that projects are properly implemented and monitored, with strict accountability measures in place to safeguard public resources.

The Niger State government is committed to ensuring that the Ward Development Project has a tangible impact on the lives of its citizens, particularly women who are often the most vulnerable members of society. As Hon. Binta Mamman, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, noted, the project will help alleviate the suffering of women by boosting productivity and socio-economic growth through the provision of functional infrastructure such as boreholes, Primary Health Care centers, and schools.

As the sensitization tour continues across other emirates and local government areas, the State Steering Committee is poised to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Niger State’s residents. With a focus on community-driven development, transparency, and accountability, the Ward Development Project has the potential to be a game-changer for the state’s development landscape.
