Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff Says Military in Control of North-east Despite Insurgent Resurgence

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, has reassured citizens that the military and security agencies are in full control of the situation in the North-east, despite a recent surge in insurgent activities. Musa made this statement while addressing the press in Maiduguri, where he emphasized that the occasional attacks should not be a cause for concern.

The Chief of Defence Staff had visited Borno State three weeks prior, accompanied by the Ministers of Defence and other service chiefs, to assess the security situation. Upon his return, he sought to reassess the renewed attacks and engage with stakeholders to chart a way forward. Musa underscored the importance of collective effort in combating terrorism, stating that “security is not a one-man business.” He appealed to everyone to join forces against Boko Haram, ISWAP, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality to ensure peace and development in the country.

Musa attributed the resurgence of attacks to pressure on terrorists in the Sahel region, which has led to an increase in attacks in Nigeria, particularly around the porous borders of the Lake Chad Basin. He assured that the authorities are working diligently to address these challenges. During his recent visit to Russia, Nigeria maintained a non-aligned stance while engaging with key stakeholders willing to partner in the fight against terrorism. Musa also announced the procurement of sophisticated weapons, which will be deployed soon, alongside new strategies to combat terrorism.

As part of his assessment, Musa visited Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, where explosions had occurred at the armoury due to heat waves. He also met with key stakeholders and senior military officials from the Theatre Command Sector 1 Operation Hadin Kai at the 7 Division, Maimalari Cantonment. The Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has reaffirmed its commitment to bringing lasting peace and development to all parts of Nigeria. With the military and security agencies firmly in control, citizens can be reassured that efforts are being made to address the security challenges and ensure a safer future for the country.
