Nigeria Commits to Universal Access to Eye Care Services
In a significant move towards improving healthcare in Nigeria, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that all Nigerians have access to necessary eye care services. This commitment was made by Dr. Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, during the recent Eyeball Summit in Abuja. The summit, hosted by the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN), brought together stakeholders to discuss the future of eye care in Nigeria and explore ways to strengthen the country’s eye care system.
The theme of the summit, "Shaping the Future of Eye Care in Nigeria: Strengthening Systems Through Strategic Alliances," resonated with the Ministry’s current focus on strategic investments in the health sector. Dr. Salako emphasized that the government cannot tackle eye health issues in isolation, given the rising challenges of visual impairment and increasing demand for eye care services. He stressed the importance of collaboration, stating that "through partnerships, we can pool resources, share expertise, and develop innovative solutions to overcome the gaps in eye care provision."
The government’s commitment to improving access to eye care services is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to provide Nigerians with the healthcare they need without financial hardship. Dr. Salako highlighted the need for strategic alliances, cooperation, and collaboration to achieve this goal. He noted that raising awareness about regular eye examinations, ensuring the availability of necessary infrastructure and skilled personnel, and developing eye health-friendly policies are crucial steps towards strengthening the eye care system.
Dr. Obinna Awiaka, Registrar of the Board, echoed Dr. Salako’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of innovation, knowledge, and collaboration in protecting and enhancing the gift of sight for every Nigerian. He stressed that in an era of rapid technological change and complex healthcare challenges, it is imperative for the custodians of vision health to stay ahead of the curve and uphold the highest ethical and professional standards.
The Nigerian government’s dedication to improving access to affordable eye care services is particularly significant in a country where many people live in underserved areas. By prioritizing eye care and collaborating with stakeholders, the government aims to ensure that all Nigerians, regardless of their location or financial situation, have access to the eye care they require. As Dr. Salako aptly put it, "the government remains dedicated to providing the necessary tools, policies, and conducive environment to enable you to perform your duties effectively." This commitment is a significant step towards achieving universal access to eye care services in Nigeria and improving the overall health and wellbeing of its citizens.
