Elders Demand Apology from Senator Suswam Over Comments on Ukum Protests

PDP now in ICU, faces a 50-50 chance of survival - Suswam

A group of elders from the Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State, Nigeria, has come out in support of the Ukum Young Elites, who are demanding an apology from Senator Gabriel Suswam. The elders are upset over comments made by Senator Suswam, which they describe as “derogatory and insulting” to the Ukum people. In a statement released on Sunday, May 18, the group of over a dozen elders gave Senator Suswam a seven-day ultimatum to apologize for his remarks.

The controversy stems from recent protests that took place during a visit by Governor Hyacinth Alia to Ukum. The protests were a response to the repeated and deadly attacks on communities in the area, including the killing of over 34 people in Akpuuna, more than 100 in Ayati, and another 100 in Chito. Despite warnings about the presence of Fulani terrorists in Chito, which lasted for five days, the attacks occurred, and the elders are frustrated that the state government has not done enough to address the situation.

The elders noted that Governor Alia visited Akpuuna but failed to fulfill any of the promises he made, and that there are no Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the area to support those affected by the attacks. They also criticized the absence of official condolences from the state government and the lack of representation from Hon. Paul Biam, the most senior political appointee from Ukum, during the governor’s visit.

The Ukum elders expressed solidarity with the protesting youths, saying that the Ukum people are peaceful but will not hesitate to stand up for themselves when pushed to the limit. They accused Senator Suswam of failing to show leadership by remaining silent during the tragedy and only speaking out to condemn the protests. “It is unbecoming of a leader to stay silent in tragedy and speak only to condemn legitimate outcry,” the statement read.

The elders reminded Senator Suswam of his ancestral roots in Ukum and warned that if he fails to apologize within seven days, the blessings that have sustained his political career could turn to curses. They called on the former senator to retract his remarks and issue a public apology without delay. The statement was signed by several notable elders, including Col. Edwin Jando (retd), Elder Ashe JNT, and Hon. Gbugho Amokaha D., among others.

The situation highlights the ongoing tensions and security challenges in the region, and the need for leaders to take responsibility and show empathy towards their constituents. The elders’ statement serves as a reminder that the people of Ukum will not be silenced and will continue to demand justice and accountability from their leaders. As the seven-day ultimatum approaches its end, it remains to be seen how Senator Suswam will respond to the elders’ demands.
