Nigerian Politician Tanko Yakasai Calls for Ideology-Driven Politics
In a recent interview, respected Nigerian elder statesman Tanko Yakasai emphasized the importance of ideology in politics, stressing that politicians should prioritize the greater good over personal interests. Yakasai, who served as Liaison Officer to the late President Shehu Shagari at the National Assembly, expressed his concerns about the current state of politics in Nigeria. He noted that the formation of political parties in the country often lacks a clear ideology, with many politicians driven by personal gain rather than a desire to serve the people.
According to Yakasai, the frequent defections of politicians from one party to another can be attributed to a lack of ideological conviction. However, he believes that the current trend of defections will not lead to a one-party state in Nigeria. “Given the size of the country and the multi-party system being practiced, it will be difficult for the country to melt into a one-party state,” he said. Yakasai also pointed out that a one-party system would struggle to satisfy the diverse needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people, highlighting the importance of opposition voices in a democracy.
Yakasai also shared his thoughts on the role of regional bodies, such as the Arewa Consultative Forum, Ohaneze Ndigbo, and Afenifere, in promoting national unity. Unfortunately, he feels that these organizations have not done enough to advance the cause of unity in Nigeria. As a proponent of rotational presidency, Yakasai believes that allowing key political offices to rotate among different regions can help promote unity and stability in the country. This idea, he noted, was first proposed by the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and remains a valid proposition for Nigeria’s unity.
Yakasai’s comments come at a time when Nigeria is navigating complex political landscape, with many politicians switching parties in search of better opportunities. His emphasis on ideology-driven politics serves as a reminder of the importance of principle and conviction in leadership. By prioritizing the greater good and working towards national unity, Nigerian politicians can build a brighter future for the country and its people.
