Instagram Cracks Down on Age Restrictions with AI Technology
In a significant move to enhance online safety, Instagram has announced plans to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to identify and redirect underage users to age-appropriate "teen accounts." This development comes as the platform seeks to combat the widespread practice of teens circumventing age restrictions by providing false birth dates during sign-up.
According to a recent Instagram blog post, the AI technology will proactively detect teens on accounts with adult birthdays listed and place them in teen account settings, which boast a range of safety features. This move is part of Instagram’s broader efforts to create a safer online environment for minors. For instance, the platform has recently restricted teens under 16 from going live and now requires parental consent before allowing teens to turn off content moderation filters designed to blur nude images in direct messages.
To ensure the accuracy of its AI technology, Instagram is offering users the option to adjust the restrictiveness of teen account settings in case of errors. Furthermore, the platform will begin sending notifications to parents with Instagram accounts, providing them with guidance on discussing the importance of accurate age provision with their children. This initiative is particularly significant in light of the lawsuits faced by Meta, Instagram’s parent company, which argue that the company has failed to adequately protect minors from harm or warn them of potential dangers associated with using Facebook and Instagram.
Notably, Instagram has already enrolled at least 54 million teens worldwide into teen accounts, with the vast majority of teens aged 13-15 opting to maintain this setting. As Instagram noted in its blog post, "The digital world continues to evolve, and we have to evolve with it. That’s why it’s essential that we work together with parents to ensure as many teens as possible have the protective settings that come with Teen Accounts."
