The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party, LP, has expressed strong optimism about its chances in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12, provided the exercise is conducted in a free and credible manner.
Speaking in an interview with journalists on Sunday, the Deputy Chairman of the party in Lagos, Mr Olusupo Ajayi, said the LP is well-positioned to win at the grassroots level.
Media Talk Africa recalls that 26 chairmanship candidates emerged on Friday to contest the polls, which will be held across all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, according to the timetable released by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC.
Ajayi described the party’s delegate-based primaries in 26 councils as peaceful and transparent, adding that the Labour Party is now focused on running a vigorous and well-structured campaign.
“Recall that we had the highest number of votes in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election,” Ajayi noted. “The people of Lagos still resonate with the vision and message of the Labour Party.”
Emphasising that the upcoming poll is a grassroots contest, Ajayi said the LP is committed to delivering transformative governance and meaningful development, despite going up against the incumbent ruling party.
He assured that the party would strictly operate within legal frameworks to mobilise voters and build strong connections with local communities across the state.
If successful at the polls, Ajayi said the LP would prioritise community-focused governance and sustained public engagement, noting that the party’s participation in the elections is part of a broader effort to return power to the grassroots and restore public confidence in democratic institutions.
He also called on the Chairperson of LASIEC, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
“In the end, we will all return to dust. What we leave behind is goodwill for our children and future generations, he said.
“I hope she maintains her integrity so her legacy and goodwill can endure for generations to come.”
