Borno Governor Raises Alarm as Boko Haram Takes Over Marte Local Government Area

Boko Haram may soon take over Marte LGA, Gov. Zulum warns — Daily Nigerian

A dire situation is unfolding in Nigeria’s Borno State, where Governor Babagana Zulum is sounding the alarm over the potential takeover of the Marte Local Government Area by Boko Haram insurgents. Following a visit to the community on Saturday, the governor revealed that virtually all communities in the area have fallen under the insurgents’ control. This disturbing development has prompted Mr. Zulum to call for urgent and sustainable solutions to restore stability to the region.

The governor’s concerns are rooted in the recent displacement of approximately 20,000 people from Marte to Dikwa, a phenomenon that he warns could make the younger refugees vulnerable to recruitment by the insurgents. Mr. Zulum emphasized that Marte was previously resettled about four years ago, only to be ransacked and displaced once again over the last three days. This cycle of displacement and resettlement has created a precarious situation, with the governor underscoring the need for collective action to prevent further instability.

The sheer scale of the displacement is a pressing concern, with Mr. Zulum highlighting the risks associated with allowing such a large number of people to remain in makeshift camps. He cautioned that this could lead to the recruitment of younger individuals by the insurgents, exacerbating the already volatile situation. The governor’s assessment of the situation is stark, noting that Marte Local Government, which once comprised over 300 towns and villages, is now down to just one standing community.

In a plea for support, Mr. Zulum called upon the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army to collaborate and find a solution to the crisis. He emphasized the importance of holding their ground and maintaining control over the single remaining town in the local government area. The situation in Marte serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against insurgency in the region and the need for concerted efforts to restore peace and stability. As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that a comprehensive and sustainable approach will be necessary to address the complex challenges facing the community and prevent further displacement and instability.
