Obi decries rising insecurity in Borno, lauds Zulum’s commitment — Daily Nigerian

Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Borno State, praising Governor Babagana Zulum for his tireless efforts to address the challenge. In a recent statement, Obi emphasized the dire situation in the Marte area, calling for immediate action to prevent further deterioration.

The security situation in Borno State is alarming, with the Marte area being a major flashpoint. Obi described the situation as a “national alarm bell that must not be ignored.” He commended Governor Zulum for his bravery in relocating to the troubled area, demonstrating leadership that is “present, proactive, and people-centred.” Obi noted that Zulum’s actions are not just commendable, but also a challenge to those in authority to take decisive action.

The humanitarian crisis in Borno State is staggering, with over 300 communities exposed to danger and more than 20,000 people displaced once again. Obi stressed that these numbers represent families, children, and communities whose hopes are hanging by a thread. He highlighted the critical concerns raised by Zulum, including the regrouping of insurgents around Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills, and the imminent collapse of Marte. Obi emphasized that the window for action is closing and that urgency and sincerity are required to respond to the situation.

Obi reiterated that Nigeria’s security forces need reinforcements, and displaced citizens need protection. He stressed the importance of showing the will to act swiftly and consistently, driven by compassion, competence, and courage. He praised Zulum for demonstrating these qualities, saying that Nigeria works best when leadership is driven by these values. Ultimately, Obi emphasized that the issue at hand is not about politics, but about the people and protecting the soul of the nation.
