Federal Government to Sell 753 Housing Units Recovered from Ex-Central Bank Governor

Nigerian govt to sell off 753-unit housing estate recovered from Emefiele — Daily Nigerian

The Nigerian government has announced plans to sell 753 housing units seized from former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, as part of its efforts to recover proceeds of crime. This decision comes after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recovered the properties, which consist of duplexes located on a 150,462.86 square meter parcel of land in the Lokogoma District of Abuja.

According to Salisu Haiba, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the ministry has taken delivery of the estate and will conduct a joint assessment with the EFCC to determine its state. The assessment will include thorough integrity and structural evaluations to ensure the buildings and infrastructure are safe and suitable for habitation. A comprehensive technical evaluation will also be undertaken to determine the cost of completing outstanding infrastructure and facilities, such as perimeter fencing, internal roads, drainage systems, and recreational centers.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development plans to sell the units to the public and for special government needs. Minister Ahmed Dangiwa stated that the public sale component will involve a transparent and competitive process, including nationwide advertisements and the use of the Renewed Hope Portal for interested buyers to submit their expressions of interest.

EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in managing forfeited assets, noting that the handing over of the property demonstrates the impact of the fight against financial crimes and corruption. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for creating a conducive environment for the fight against corruption to thrive and thanked the judiciary for its support in ensuring that individuals do not benefit from proceeds of crime.

The sale of these properties is a significant step in the Nigerian government’s efforts to recover proceeds of crime and promote transparency and accountability. The government’s commitment to selling the units through a transparent and competitive process is also expected to generate interest from potential buyers and contribute to the development of the housing sector. As the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development moves forward with the sale, it is likely to be closely watched by the public and other stakeholders interested in the outcome of this high-profile case.
