Detained Biafra Activist Simon Ekpa Denies Involvement in South-East Nigeria Killings

Simon Ekpa denies being responsibility for killings, slams Biafra radio

A prominent Biafra activist, Simon Ekpa, has categorically denied any involvement in the recent killings in South-East Nigeria. Through his lawyer, Mr. Jonathan Levy, Ekpa has come out strongly against what he terms defamatory publications by Biafra Radio and other outlets. These publications allegedly link him and his organization to acts of violence in Orsu and other communities in Imo and Anambra states.

The controversy surrounds a publication on Biafra Radio dated March 27, 2025, which Ekpa’s team claims contains false and defamatory statements about him and his affiliates, particularly in relation to his role as Prime Minister of the United States of Biafra (USB) and his association with the Biafra Liberation Army (BLA). According to Ekpa’s lawyer, the allegations that he, the BLA, or any part of the USB are responsible for murder or other violent acts in southeastern Nigeria are entirely false and without foundation.

Ekpa’s team argues that these baseless accusations not only threaten the safety of USB affiliates but also undermine the political and diplomatic efforts of the Biafran liberation movement. The lawyer points out that the publication in question constitutes actionable libel under both domestic and international defamation laws in the United Kingdom and the United States. They contend that the publication’s intent is malicious, aiming to discredit and incite hatred against individuals and organizations involved in legitimate political advocacy.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Ekpa is currently facing trial by the Finnish government. This backdrop raises concerns about the timing and motivations behind the defamatory publications. Ekpa’s group has demanded an immediate retraction of the offending publication, emphasizing the harm it has caused and continues to cause to their reputation and efforts.

The Biafran movement, with its complex history and current political landscape, is no stranger to controversy and internal conflicts. This latest development adds another layer to the narrative, highlighting the challenges of navigating political activism in a highly charged environment. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the demand for retraction will be met and what implications this will have for Ekpa’s trial and the broader Biafran liberation movement.
