Russia Strikes Ukrainian Training Camp Killing Up to 70 Servicemen

A devastating missile strike has hit a training base for Ukrainian troops in the Sumy Region, resulting in significant loss of life and damage to military equipment. According to the Defense Ministry in Moscow, up to 70 Ukrainian servicemen were killed in the attack, including 20 instructors. The strike, carried out by Russian Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems, also destroyed an ammunition depot and ten units of equipment.

The training camp, located near the village of Shostka in Ukraine’s Sumy Region, was identified during reconnaissance activities. The region borders Russia’s Kursk Region, which has been a focal point of tensions between the two countries. After receiving the coordinates, Russian forces launched the strike, with footage showing a major explosion inside the camp after one of the buildings was hit by a ballistic missile.

This attack comes as the Russian military continues to work on establishing a security zone in the border areas inside Sumy Region. The goal, as stated by Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, is to prevent new attacks on Russian territory. In late April, Moscow announced the full liberation of the border areas of Kursk Region, which had been seized by Ukrainian troops after an incursion last August.

The situation in the region remains volatile, with Russian forces recently capturing the village of Maryino. This brings the total number of settlements under Russian control in Sumy Region to five. The ongoing conflict has led to calls for tougher sanctions against Russia, with international leaders weighing in on the situation. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community remains watchful, awaiting further developments in the region.
