Osun State Governor Vows to Recapture Escaped Inmates After Ilesa Jailbreak

Gov Adeleke vows action over Ilesa jailbreak

A recent jailbreak at the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State, Nigeria, has sparked serious concern from Governor Ademola Adeleke. The incident, which occurred early on Tuesday, resulted in the escape of seven awaiting trial inmates. Governor Adeleke has assured the public that his administration will work closely with the Federal Government to uncover the cause of the jailbreak and bring the escapees back into custody.

During a visit to the correctional facility, Governor Adeleke emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and the implementation of preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future. He acknowledged the Federal Government’s announcement of a ₦5 million reward for any information leading to the arrest of the escapees. The governor also stated that his government would work to enhance perimeter security and improve lighting systems at the facility, including the installation of a multi-million naira solar-powered electricity system.

The Controller of the Ilesa Correctional Centre, C.C. Oluwadele, revealed that the inmates escaped during a heavy downpour, which they exploited to breach security at the facility. A joint search operation is currently underway, and the biometric data of the escapees has been released to aid public identification. In a positive development, one of the escapees, 39-year-old Kabiru Oyedun, has been re-arrested by the Nigerian Police Force in Lagos State following a tip-off from members of the public.

Governor Adeleke’s commitment to addressing the issue and preventing future occurrences is clear. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the state and federal governments to address infrastructural gaps at the centre. The governor’s efforts to enhance security and improve conditions at the facility are a step in the right direction, and it is hoped that the perpetrators will be brought to justice soon. With the search operation ongoing and the public’s assistance, it is likely that the remaining escapees will be apprehended and normalcy restored at the facility.
