Abia State PDP Accuses Governor Alex Otti of Secrecy Over Project Costs and Revenue

Abia: Disclose cost of projects, IGR - PDP challenges Alex Otti

A wave of concern has swept over Abia State in Nigeria as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) levels accusations of secrecy against the current state government. The PDP is demanding transparency regarding the cost of projects and the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti. This call for accountability comes as the administration prepares to mark its second anniversary on May 29, 2025.

At the heart of the issue is the alleged lack of disclosure about the financial details of various projects undertaken by the Otti administration. The PDP, through its Publicity Secretary, Mazi Eric Ikwuagwu, highlighted the absence of refutations to claims of monumental fraud found in the state’s quarterly financial reports. These reports detail significant expenditures, including N6.5 billion for recreational facilities, N10 billion for capacity building, and a staggering N54 billion for the renovation of non-existent public schools, among others. The total value of these projects and others like them amounts to over N200 billion.

Furthermore, the party has drawn attention to the alleged spending of N36.5 billion on a 5.7km road in Port Harcourt, which, if accurate, would make it the most expensive road in Africa at N6.18 billion per kilometer. Instead of addressing these financial concerns, the focus has shifted towards discrediting those bringing these issues to light. The PDP asserts that such tactics will not deter the pursuit of transparency and accountability.

The case of Engr. Eke Ako, a civil engineer from Abia State based in Scotland, has been cited as an example of the administration’s changing stance on accountability. For eight years, Engr. Ako had held the previous administration accountable, earning him praise from those now in power. However, upon turning his scrutiny to the Otti administration, he faces accusations of being sponsored by the PDP. The PDP questions the logic behind these accusations, pointing out that Engr. Ako’s integrity and independence are beyond reproach.

The PDP’s call for transparency also extends to the approximately N800 billion received by the Otti administration over 23 months, which, according to the party, has been squandered without adequate explanation. The party’s stance reflects a broader concern about governance and the use of public funds in Abia State. As the administration approaches its second anniversary, the demand for clear, factual information about its financial dealings and projects is likely to intensify.

The situation in Abia State underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. The ability of citizens and opposition parties to scrutinize government actions and expenditures is crucial for ensuring that power is used in the public’s best interest. As the debate over the Otti administration’s financial management continues, the international community watches with interest, recognizing the universal principles of good governance at play. The coming weeks will be critical in determining how these issues are addressed and the implications they may have for the future of Abia State.
