Malaysia Condemns Israeli Atrocities in Gaza, Citing Indifference and Double Standards
In a strong statement, Malaysia has denounced the recent surge in Israeli violence in the Gaza Strip, lambasting the international community for its perceived indifference and double standards towards the plight of the Palestinian people. This condemnation comes as the death toll in Gaza continues to rise, with nearly 54,000 victims, mostly women and children, having lost their lives since October 2023.
Speaking at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan opened the gathering by condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza. Hasan emphasized that the atrocities committed against Palestinians are a direct result of the erosion of international law, underscoring the need for collective action to address the crisis. "The atrocities committed against the Palestinian people continue to reflect indifference and double standards," Hasan said, urging the ASEAN bloc not to remain silent on the issue.
The Malaysian government’s stance is particularly significant, given the country’s Muslim-majority population and its historical lack of diplomatic relations with Israel. In a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people, Kuala Lumpur has channelled over $10 million in humanitarian aid to Gaza since October 2023. This move demonstrates Malaysia’s commitment to providing support to those affected by the conflict, while also highlighting the need for a more robust international response.
As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, Malaysia’s condemnation serves as a powerful reminder of the need for increased global attention and action. With the ASEAN bloc holding its 46th summit on Monday, the region’s foreign ministers will likely face pressure to address the crisis and explore ways to promote a peaceful resolution. As Foreign Minister Hasan aptly put it, "Asean cannot remain silent" on this critical issue, emphasizing the importance of collective leadership in promoting human rights and international law.
The international community is watching with bated breath as the situation in Gaza unfolds, and Malaysia’s strong stance serves as a call to action for world leaders to re-examine their response to the crisis. As the death toll continues to rise, it is imperative that nations come together to promote a peaceful and just resolution, one that upholds the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people.
