A wave of grief and outrage has engulfed the Karim-Lamido local government council of Taraba State, Nigeria, as villagers laid to rest over 37 victims of a brutal attack by suspected herdsmen. The governor’s departure from Jalingo through Danbaba Suntai Airport at 2:45 p.m. coincided with the mourners in Munga community preparing to bury their dead. This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued Karim-Lamido in recent weeks, leaving the community on edge. Local residents expressed deep frustration over what they perceive as a lack of empathy and support from the state government.

One villager lamented, “The governor encouraged us to return to our homes, yet he’s nowhere to be found when we’re under siege. Where is he now that we’re burying more than 37 of our people?” Community members also raised concerns about the insufficient security, stating that local hunters and vigilantes have been left to fend for themselves against heavily armed attackers.

Another resident pointed out, “These killers are not unknown. The governor and military officials met with the parties involved just weeks ago. We raised the alarm, but nothing was done.” Despite the Taraba State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel S. Brete, visiting the affected communities to engage with both villagers and Fulani leaders, the community remains uneasy.
