Nigeria’s Opposition Party on the Brink of Collapse: Analyst Predicts Demise of PDP

In a stark assessment, political and public affairs analyst Mojeed Dahiru has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one of Nigeria’s main opposition parties, is irreparably damaged and destined for collapse. This dire prediction comes amidst the party’s ongoing internal crisis, which has been escalating since the 2023 presidential election. According to Dahiru, the PDP’s decision to abandon its zoning principle and choose a northern candidate over a southern one was a "mortal sin" that has sealed the party’s fate.

Dahiru’s remarks, made during an appearance on Channels Television, highlighted the deep-seated issues within the PDP. He emphasized that the party’s failure to adhere to its zoning policy, which was meant to rotate power between the north and south, has led to its current predicament. By opting for a northern candidate, the PDP alienated its southern support base, setting in motion a chain of events that has ultimately led to the party’s downfall. As Dahiru put it, "The wages of sin is death," suggesting that the PDP’s actions have consequences that cannot be reversed.

The analyst pointed to the party’s recent gathering in Abuja, which aimed to address grievances and settle scores, as a failed attempt to salvage the situation. Instead, the meeting only exposed the deep divisions within the party. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has since vowed to fight to the finish, but Dahiru remains unconvinced that such efforts can save the PDP. He believes that the party’s problems run too deep, citing the actions of Atiku, a key figure in the party, as a major contributor to its woes.

Dahiru’s prediction that the PDP will not survive beyond 2027 is a bleak outlook for a party that was once a dominant force in Nigerian politics. The analyst argues that the party’s inability to repent and address its weaknesses has made its demise inevitable. Even the actions of Wike, a prominent PDP member, are seen as a reaction to the party’s northern flank, led by Atiku, rather than a genuine attempt to save the party. As Dahiru noted, "To every action, there is an equal opposite reaction," suggesting that the consequences of the PDP’s actions will be severe.

In conclusion, the PDP’s future looks increasingly uncertain, with Dahiru’s prediction of its imminent collapse serving as a stark warning. As the party struggles to come to terms with its internal conflicts and the consequences of its actions, one thing is clear: the Nigerian political landscape is on the cusp of significant change. The question now is whether the PDP can find a way to reverse its fortunes or if it will indeed become a relic of the past, a casualty of its own mistakes and inability to adapt to the changing political climate.
