In a recent address, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State asserted his independence from his predecessor, Senator David Umahi, stating that he does not control his policies or actions. This declaration was made during a lecture marking Nwifuru’s second anniversary in office, where he emphasized his personal responsibility for all his actions. The governor described himself as “logically stubborn” and noted that Umahi, whom he refers to as his “father and boss,” has never attempted to dictate his decisions.
Nwifuru’s statement comes amidst speculation that Umahi, who previously served as the state’s governor, exerted significant influence over his successor. However, the current governor sought to dispel this notion, highlighting his 16-year working relationship with Umahi and the knowledge he gained from him. Nwifuru acknowledged that any shortcomings during his tenure would be his sole responsibility, adding that he could have been a better leader if Umahi actually controlled him.
The governor also used the occasion to praise Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi for standing up against a former female minister who allegedly referred to him as a hooligan during a Senate hearing. Nwifuru commended Nwebonyi’s defense, noting that it was not only a personal victory but also a testament to the state’s resilience and determination to be respected.
During the lecture, Nwifuru expressed his commitment to defending the state’s integrity and urged stakeholders to support him in this endeavor. He also thanked the guest lecturer and other speakers for their insightful comments, pledging to address the issues raised. The governor described the lecture’s theme, “Beyond celebration, navigating public expectation and developmental demands in the next two years,” as a new challenge for his administration.
Former Senate President Pius Anyim and the first Executive Governor of the state, Dr. Sam Egwu, were among those who commended Nwifuru for his achievements during his two years in office. Anyim praised the governor’s efforts in reclaiming the Abakaliki city master plan, while Egwu appreciated Nwifuru’s interventions in education, a sector that was a hallmark of his own tenure as governor. Guest Lecturer Prof. Eugene Nweke urged the governor to sustain and improve on indices that would enhance the well-being of the people and develop the state.
