A deadly attack was launched on the airstrip of Ashaka Cement Company in Gombe State, Nigeria, resulting in the death of one suspect. The incident, which occurred on Thursday at around 11:43 p.m., is believed to have been an attempted robbery. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who revealed the incident in a post on Friday, three armed assailants infiltrated the restricted area of the company’s airstrip, armed with cutlasses and sticks.
Upon gaining entry, the attackers chased two civilian guards from Pilgrims Security Company, who managed to escape unharmed. The assailants then attempted to cut down a signal tower used for aircraft control, presumably with the intention of stealing its components. Makama reported that the attackers’ actions were swiftly met with a response from security personnel, including a patrol vehicle from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who promptly dispersed the hoodlums.
However, the attackers returned to the scene, resuming their destructive activity. During a second confrontation, one of the suspects was shot in the shoulder by security operatives. The injured suspect was rushed to the General Hospital in Bajoga, where he was later confirmed dead by the attending doctor. His body was subsequently deposited at the public mortuary. The other suspects fled the scene and are currently being pursued by security forces as investigations into the incident continue.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by companies and individuals in the region. The swift response by security personnel prevented further damage and loss of life, but the incident serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between security agencies and private companies to prevent such attacks. As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge about the motivations behind the attack and the identities of the perpetrators. For now, the community remains on high alert, grateful for the bravery and quick thinking of the security personnel who prevented a potentially more disastrous outcome.
