Methodist Bishop Urges Tinubu to Prioritize Nigerian Security Over Re-election Bid Amid Rising Insecurity

Tinubu’s visit exposed failures of Kefas' administration – Former Envoy, Ardo

The safety of Nigerians has become a pressing concern, with the country facing an alarming rate of security challenges that have led to numerous deaths and displacement of citizens. In response to this crisis, Methodist Bishop Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha has urged the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to prioritize the protection of its citizens above all else.

According to Bishop Onuoha, the government’s primary focus should be on safeguarding Nigerians from non-state actors, such as bandits, Boko Haram, and herdsmen, who have been responsible for frequent killings and violence in states like Plateau, Enugu, and Benue. He emphasized that the security of citizens should take precedence over concerns about the 2027 presidential election, stating that the government should secure the country and its people first before worrying about re-election.

The cleric expressed deep sadness over the ongoing violence and insecurity, noting that the situation requires immediate action from the government. He criticized the current focus on endorsements and re-election support for President Tinubu, arguing that it portrays Nigerian politicians as insensitive to the welfare of citizens. Instead, Bishop Onuoha called on the Federal Government to take a serious stance against banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency, suggesting that if insecurity is addressed, the government would not need to campaign heavily for re-election in 2027.

Bishop Onuoha’s remarks highlight the growing concern among Nigerians about the government’s ability to ensure their safety and security. As he pointed out, “When I read stories about endorsements and people jumping ship, I feel those things are secondary considering what we are faced with.” He emphasized the need for selfless leadership, saying, “What makes you a selfless leader is to focus on unraveling these issues first before preaching to people to join your party or even accepting their endorsements for a second tenure.”

The bishop’s words serve as a reminder that the Nigerian government must take concrete steps to address the country’s security challenges and prioritize the well-being of its citizens. With the 2027 presidential election on the horizon, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these concerns and work towards creating a safer, more secure environment for all Nigerians.
