APC Chieftain Predicts Failure of Opposition Coalition Against Tinubu’s Re-election

Coalition against Tinubu will fail, APC chieftain tells Atiku, others — Daily Nigerian

In a bold statement, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a high-ranking official of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, has declared that the coalition formed by opposition parties to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid is doomed to fail. Speaking to journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, Oyintiloye advised key opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, to refrain from wasting resources on a project he believes is already destined for failure.

According to Oyintiloye, the coalition’s primary motivation is not to serve the interests of the Nigerian people, but rather to breathe new life into the fading political careers of its leaders. He characterized the coalition as a gathering of “expired” opposition leaders, suggesting that their drive is rooted in personal gain rather than altruism. Oyintiloye posited that if President Tinubu were to offer these leaders positions in his cabinet, they would swiftly switch allegiance and become his ardent supporters.

Historically, Nigeria has seen numerous attempts at coalition-building, often aimed at consolidating power and challenging dominant parties. However, as Oyintiloye noted, these coalitions have rarely achieved success. For an alliance to thrive in Nigeria, he emphasized the need for unity, strategic compromise, and long-term cohesion, rather than mere shared opposition. The motives, he stressed, must be selfless and focused on the greater good, incorporating the management of peace and conflict.

Oyintiloye criticized the current coalition against President Tinubu, asserting that its members are primarily driven by a desire to revive their flagging political careers, satisfy their greed, and express their hatred for the President. He contended that these factors, combined with their desperation for power, undermine the coalition’s legitimacy and chances of success. In his view, President Tinubu’s mastery over the political landscape makes the coalition’s efforts futile.

Reflecting on the 2023 general elections, Oyintiloye reminded the coalition leaders that despite the formidable forces arrayed against him, President Tinubu emerged victorious. He questioned how the opposition leaders expect to unseat the President now that he is in power and making strides in reviving the economy. Instead of pursuing a coalition that Oyintiloye believes is bound to fail, he urged opposition leaders, particularly those from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to redirect their energies towards supporting President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Oyintiloye pointed to the President’s achievements across various sectors over the past two years as evidence that the coalition’s efforts would be in vain. He encouraged the opposition to recognize the futility of their endeavor and instead work towards a more constructive engagement with the current administration. With the political landscape of Nigeria being as complex and dynamic as it is, only time will tell if Oyintiloye’s predictions will come to pass, or if the opposition coalition will manage to challenge President Tinubu’s re-election bid more effectively than anticipated.
