Bauchi Government Enhances Airport Security with Farming Ban and Surveillance Boost

Insecurity: Bauchi Govt bans farming, grazing around airport

In a significant move to bolster security, the Bauchi State Government has forbidden all farming and grazing activities within the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport (SATBIA) premises. This decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance the airport’s security measures, as directed by Governor Bala Mohammed.

According to Engr. Mohammad Hamisu Garba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Housing, the ban aligns with the governor’s directive to strengthen the airport’s security architecture and prevent further breaches. Garba made this announcement during a recent security and stakeholders’ meeting held at the airport. The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between airport authorities and local communities in ensuring the airport’s safety and operational readiness.

As part of this security enhancement, seven surveillance personnel from nearby communities have been deployed to work closely with airport authorities. Their primary responsibilities include monitoring activities, reporting suspicious behavior, and preventing vandalism. This proactive approach aims to prevent any potential security threats and guarantee the airport’s operational efficiency.

The recent successful airlift of 2025 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia from SATBIA serves as a testament to the airport’s operational readiness. Hamisu emphasized the significance of this achievement, highlighting the airport’s capacity to handle large-scale operations safely and efficiently. He also urged traditional leaders to support the effort by raising awareness and mobilizing local backing to protect the airport, recognizing the vital role that community engagement plays in maintaining security.

SATBIA General Manager, Surveyor Babagana Muhammad Tata, also addressed the gathering, revealing that the airport had suffered recent acts of sabotage. In response, Tata called for a comprehensive overhaul of the airport’s security strategy, emphasizing the need for surrounding communities to take ownership of the facility. By fostering a sense of responsibility and cooperation among local residents, the airport can ensure a safer and more secure environment for all users.

The Bauchi State Government’s decisive action to enhance security at SATBIA demonstrates its commitment to providing a safe and efficient travel experience for passengers. As the airport continues to play a vital role in connecting the region to the rest of the world, the collaboration between airport authorities, local communities, and government agencies will be crucial in maintaining the highest standards of security and operational excellence.
