NSCDC Raids Illegal Mining Site in Anambra, Seizes Equipment and Launches Manhunt for Suspects

In a bold move to combat illegal mining activities, the Anambra Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has raided an unauthorized mining site in the state, seizing a sand dredging machine in the process. The operation, which took place at the Omambala River in Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum Local Government Area, is part of the command’s ongoing efforts to crack down on illicit mining.

According to the state Commandant, Olatunde Maku, the raid was carried out based on credible intelligence suggesting illegal mining activities at the site. On May 30, the NSCDC team swooped in on the site, catching the suspected miners off guard. As the team approached, the miners fled the scene, leaving behind a significant amount of equipment.

The recovered items include a dredger, two dredging engine pumps, 18 drums, five suction pipes, eight plastic discharge pipes, three jerry cans, a plastic bucket, and a funnel. The illegal mining site has been sealed, and a manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the mining site was initially licensed to one Mr. Ike Nweke of Trillike Investment Ltd. However, the site was later taken over by unauthorized miners. The NSCDC has reiterated its commitment to protecting legitimate title holders, preventing revenue loss, and promoting environmental sustainability. A full investigation has been launched to uncover the extent of the suspects’ activities and identify any accomplices.

Commandant Maku has warned that offenders will be prosecuted upon conclusion of the investigation, reaffirming the NSCDC’s dedication to enforcing the law and safeguarding the nation’s mineral resources. The corps is sending a strong message to illegal miners, warning them to desist from their activities or face the consequences. This move is a significant step forward in the fight against illegal mining, which has been a persistent problem in the region.

The NSCDC’s efforts to combat illegal mining are crucial, not only for the protection of the environment but also for the preservation of the nation’s mineral resources. The command’s commitment to enforcing the law and safeguarding these resources is a welcome development, and it is hoped that this will serve as a deterrent to those engaging in illicit mining activities. As the investigation continues, it is expected that more details will emerge, shedding light on the extent of the illegal mining operations and those involved.
