Terrorist Plot Foiled: Uganda Police Assure Public of Security After Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine Incident

A dramatic explosion rocked the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine in Uganda on Tuesday morning, leaving two suspected terrorists dead and sending shockwaves throughout the country. The incident occurred as thousands of believers gathered to celebrate the Uganda Martyrs, a significant event in the country’s religious calendar. Fortunately, no bystanders or members of the public were harmed in the blast.

According to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the duo was carrying an explosive device on a motorcycle when they were taken out of action by security forces in an intelligence-led operation. Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba quickly moved to reassure the public, stating, "There has been an explosion, but the most important message to our people is that they should remain calm. We are in control. We are preserving this scene to ensure it is well investigated."

Byakagaba urged the public to be cautious and report any suspicious activity, emphasizing that security agencies have cordoned off the scene to facilitate ongoing investigations. The incident has raised concerns about terrorism in the region, particularly given the similarities to the November 2021 twin blasts in Kampala, which targeted the Central Police Station and Parliamentary Avenue, killing at least 10 people and injuring others.

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorist group, operating in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been blamed for the 2021 attack. Since then, the UPDF has launched a full-scale operation against the ADF, resulting in the capture or killing of several top commanders and the liberation of captives. ADF camps have also been decimated, forcing the group’s fighters to flee inland to evade the UPDF and Congolese army’s fire.

As President Museveni joined thousands of believers at the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine to celebrate the Uganda Martyrs, security was tightened to prevent any further incidents. The Ugandan authorities have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining security and preventing terrorist activities.

As Byakagaba emphasized, "We assure the public of security."
