Mali Suspends Artisanal Gold Mining Amid Rainy Season Safety Concerns

Mali suspends artisanal gold mining activities during rainy season

Mali has taken a significant step to protect the lives of artisanal gold miners by suspending all mining activities from June to September. The decision, announced by the Malian mines ministry, aims to safeguard workers from the risks of landslides during the rainy season. According to the ministry, meteorological services have forecast heavy rains from June 15 to September 30, 2025, prompting the suspension.

The move is motivated by safety concerns, as stated by a spokesperson for the ministry, and comes after a series of deadly accidents in the industry. In March, the government suspended the granting of new artisanal mining permits to foreigners following two accidents that killed dozens of people, mostly women. The tragedy of a tunnel collapse in an unregulated gold mine in January 2024, which resulted in the loss of over 70 lives, further highlights the need for stricter safety measures.

Artisanal mining in West Africa has seen a surge in recent years due to growing demand and rising prices. However, this increase has also led to a rise in safety risks, as miners often employ old-fashioned and unregulated methods. Illegal mining activities exacerbate these risks, making the industry even more hazardous. The Malian government is working to regain control over the country’s gold resources and is currently engaged in a legal battle with Canadian gold giant Barrick.

Mali remains one of Africa’s main gold producers, with an estimated 51 metric tons of gold produced in 2024. Although this represents a 23% drop from the previous year, the country’s gold industry continues to play a significant role in its economy. The temporary suspension of artisanal gold mining activities is a crucial step towards ensuring the safety of miners and regulating the industry. By taking proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with artisanal mining, the Malian government aims to create a safer and more sustainable environment for this vital sector.
