Uganda Security Forces Foil Suicide Bombing Attempt on Martyrs’ Day After Receiving Intelligence

Foiled Suicide Bombing Attempt: Uganda’s Security Forces Thwart Martyrs’ Day Terror Plot

In a stunning revelation, Colonel Chris Magezi, the acting Defence Public Information Officer, has disclosed that Uganda’s security forces were not caught off guard by the recent suicide bombing attempt on June 3, Martyrs’ Day. Thanks to timely intelligence gathered two days prior, authorities were able to prepare for the potential threat, ultimately foiling the attack.

The would-be bomber, identified as Aisha Katushabe, also known by aliases Byaruhanga Sumayya and Kabonesa, attempted to detonate an explosive device outside Munyonyo Basilica. However, the device exploded prematurely, killing Katushabe and the boda boda rider who was transporting her. According to Colonel Magezi, Katushabe was linked to the notorious Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terror group, which has been active in the region.

The breakthrough in the case came on June 1, when security forces arrested an ADF operative who provided critical information during interrogation. The operative revealed detailed plans of an imminent attack and named Katushabe as one of the would-be suicide bombers. Colonel Magezi explained, "Two days before the incident, we arrested one of the ADF operatives and he gave us information on their planned attack." Notably, Katushabe had been arrested by authorities two years prior, but due to insufficient evidence, she was released.

Despite not knowing the exact methods or logistics the attackers would use, security forces were on high alert in both Munyonyo and Namugongo, the primary locations for Martyrs’ Day celebrations. Colonel Magezi emphasized, "We were aware of the threat and had deployed accordingly. We didn’t know if they would use boda bodas, cars, or come on foot, but we were prepared for any scenario."

The foiled attack serves as a testament to the effectiveness of Uganda’s security forces in combating terrorism. As the region continues to face threats from groups like the ADF, the importance of timely intelligence and preparedness cannot be overstated. The incident also highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between security agencies to prevent such attacks in the future.
