The city of Kaduna, Nigeria, came to a peaceful standstill on Friday as Muslims across the 23 local government areas of the state gathered at their respective mosques to mark the beginning of Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. The usually bustling roads, including Ahmadu Bello Way, College Road, and Stadium Roundabout, were empty, with shops and business centers closed for the occasion.
As the faithful congregated for prayers, the atmosphere was filled with joy, love, and kindness. Even street beggars, who normally occupy popular joints, were seen migrating to the entrance gates of mosques, hoping to receive alms from worshippers. The air was thick with the exchange of pleasantries among smiling faces, as people expressed gratitude to God for another year of celebration.
Despite the presence of security operatives at strategic worship centers, the mood remained upbeat, with many expressing happiness and thanks to God. Mallam Muhammadu Abdullah, a motorcycle mechanic, reflected on the significance of the day, saying, “Although I’ve had no business since the beginning of this month, seeing today is a great privilege and opportunity I will never take for granted as I continue to worship my God always.”
For Hajiya Sadautu Lukeman, who lost her husband last year, the celebration was a poignant reminder of the importance of good health. She said, “I lost my husband, our breadwinner. Since then, my children have been out of school because there’s no one to pay their school fees, as I have nothing doing. Although I have nothing to celebrate, good health is a great privilege.”
The spirit of generosity was palpable, with many worshippers giving alms to those in need. Salisu Adamu, a beggar, was overwhelmed with joy, saying, “How I wish Sallah continues for a month. I have realized over N10,000 within one hour, unlike ordinary days when I cannot make up to N1,000. People are giving alms cheerfully.” As the day went on, children were seen sharing food and drinks with their loved ones, and the state enjoyed a peaceful atmosphere, free from any attacks.
The Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Kaduna served as a reminder of the power of faith and community, bringing people together in a spirit of love, kindness, and generosity. As the city returns to normal, the memories of this special day will linger, a testament to the resilience and joy of the human spirit.
