Philadelphia Phillies Struggle with Bryce Harper’s Injury
The Philadelphia Phillies are facing a tough period, having lost eight out of their last nine games, including a recent 2-1 defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. The team’s woes have been compounded by the absence of star player Bryce Harper, who has been sidelined due to a wrist injury inflammation. Harper’s injury has forced him to miss two games against the Pirates, and he has now been placed on the 10-day injured list (IL) retroactive to Friday.
Harper’s injury is not a new development, as he has been dealing with the issue since last May. Despite playing through the pain until October’s postseason, the injury has now become too severe for him to continue playing. The elbow contusion he suffered after being hit by Atlanta Braves’ Spencer Strider on May 27 may have accelerated the pain, making it inevitable for him to take time off.
"It’s been long enough to where it’s gotten to the point where I can’t really function on a baseball field or hit a baseball or anything like that," Harper said. "So, it’s just a good time for me to take some time and get it right." Harper is optimistic about his recovery, stating, "Just got to get through the treatment phase and see what I can do. But we’ve got to get it to calm down and [I’ll] get out there when I can."
Phillies manager Rob Thomson is unconcerned about Harper’s status, believing that with proper treatment, he can return to the field this season. "I would think that it’s going to take less time since he’s here and can get treatment," Thomson said. "So I’m hoping that it’s real quick." The team has made adjustments to their lineup, with Alec Bohm taking over at first base and prospect Otto Kemp filling in at the other corner.
Harper’s injury has significant implications for the Phillies, who are struggling to find their footing. His absence has been felt, particularly in the second half of 2024, when his OPS dipped from .982 pre-All Star break to .793 post-All Star break. As the team navigates this challenging period, they will be hoping for a speedy recovery from their star player to help turn their fortunes around.
The Philadelphia Phillies will be looking to bounce back from their recent losses and find a way to win without Harper in the lineup. With proper treatment and rehabilitation, Harper is expected to return to the field this season, and the team will be counting on him to help them get back on track.
