Ekiti State Governor Gives Roadside Traders Two Week Ultimatum to Relocate to New Ultra Modern Market

Ekiti 2026: APC factions clash over Oyebanji's re-election ambition

In a bid to enhance the economic and infrastructural development of Ado-Ekiti, the capital city of Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has issued a two-week ultimatum to roadside traders operating in key locations such as Bisi Market and Kings Market. These traders are expected to relocate to the newly completed ultra-modern Agric Olope Market by June 23rd or face legal consequences.

During a meeting with market women at the Palace of Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Governor Oyebanji emphasized the importance of supporting his administration’s policy of maintaining order and safety in the city. He highlighted that street trading poses significant health and safety risks to both the traders and the general public. The governor encouraged the traders to take advantage of the modern facilities provided at the new market, which includes water supply, modern toilets, a good road network, security infrastructure, warehouses, and solar-powered lighting for night trading.

The governor expressed his appreciation for the traders’ willingness to relocate and assured them of his government’s commitment to improving their livelihoods and transforming Ado-Ekiti into a smart and modern city. He noted that the new market was designed with the traders’ needs in mind, having consulted with them to understand their requirements. The market features amenities such as water supply, toilets, security, warehouses, and parking spaces, all aimed at providing a comfortable and efficient trading experience.

For those who may resist the relocation, the governor warned that they would face the full force of the law, emphasizing that street trading is not only hazardous but also detrimental to the traders’ economic well-being. He expressed confidence that the majority of traders would comply with the agreement, given the democratic approach taken by his administration, which prioritizes consultation over coercion.

The Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, Mrs. Tayo Adeola, commended Governor Oyebanji for his visionary leadership in completing the ultra-modern market. She described the market as a testament to the governor’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of traders and the commercial landscape of Ado-Ekiti. Adeola encouraged the traders to start obtaining forms for shop and space allocations in the new market, beginning from the following Tuesday.

As the relocation deadline approaches, the Ekiti State government remains committed to its vision of a modern and safe city, where traders can operate in a conducive environment, free from the risks associated with street trading. The successful relocation of these traders to the ultra-modern Agric Olope Market is poised to mark a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to transform Ado-Ekiti into a thriving commercial hub.
