Northwest University Kano Staff Member Killed in Phone Snatching Incident

NASU, Kano branch condemns brutal killing of member

A brutal killing has sent shockwaves through the Northwest University Kano community, as a dedicated staff member, Buhari Imam, fell victim to a phone-snatching incident. The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has strongly condemned the act, describing it as “shocking and deeply distressing.”

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Imam, a vital member of the university’s Maintenance Team, was attacked with a knife around 3:30 a.m. in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. Despite efforts to save him, Imam succumbed to severe stomach injuries at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) on Friday, June 13, 2025. According to Comrade Bashir Muhammad Bala, the NASU branch chairman, “Buhari Imam was viciously attacked…and we are calling for urgent intervention from the Kano State Government and security agencies.”

Imam was not only a dedicated university staff member but also a final-year Higher National Diploma (HND) student at Kano State Polytechnic, studying Electrical Engineering. His role in the university’s recent 7th Congregation was pivotal, showcasing his commitment to the institution. The union is now demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Imam’s death, urging authorities to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible.

The tragic event has left the university community in mourning, with colleagues, students, and friends of the late staff member expressing grief and concern. Imam’s passing has also highlighted the need for support for his family, as he left behind an elderly mother and four siblings. NASU has called on the government and university management to provide assistance to the deceased’s family during this difficult time. As the community comes to terms with this senseless loss, the need for justice and support for those affected remains paramount.
