Deadly Attack on Yelwata Town in Benue State Leaves Many Dead and Injured

A devastating attack has shaken the town of Yelwata in Nigeria’s Benue state, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake. The assault, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, was carried out by suspected bandits who invaded the town, sparking a fierce exchange of gunfire with security operatives.

According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the police and tactical teams responded swiftly to the attack, engaging the attackers in a intense battle that resulted in the killing of some of the assailants. However, the attack also claimed the lives of innocent individuals, with many more sustaining injuries.

DSP Edet expressed sadness over the loss of life, stating that the police are still pursuing the attackers and working to keep everyone safe. While the police have not released an official death toll, a resident of Yelwata town reported that over 70 corpses have been recovered, with the search for missing persons still ongoing. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, noted that the majority of the victims were internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had sought refuge in the town after fleeing from other areas.

The attack has raised concerns about the security situation in the region, particularly given the presence of a police station and military checkpoint in Yelwata town. The resident who spoke to NAN noted that the attackers were able to overpower the security forces, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and support to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the search and rescue mission continues, the full extent of the devastation is becoming increasingly clear. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria and the need for sustained efforts to protect vulnerable communities. The people of Yelwata town and the surrounding areas are in need of support and solidarity during this difficult time, and it is essential that the authorities take concrete steps to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
