In a significant move to support displaced individuals, the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has pledged a strong partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to enhance the state’s resettlement, reconstruction, and recovery program. This commitment aims to address the challenges faced by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the region.

During a meeting with Sharon Dimanche, the Chief of Mission for IOM UN Migration in Nigeria, Governor Buni outlined his administration’s efforts to support IDPs. Through his media aide, Mamman Mohammed, the governor highlighted the state’s policy to provide essential services and infrastructure to facilitate the resettlement and integration of displaced individuals with dignity. Specifically, the state has allocated 5% of its budget to invest in critical sectors such as education, agriculture, healthcare, roads, electricity, and water supply.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that the state’s approaches have been effective in resettling displaced persons with dignity. “We do not have an IDP camp in the state, as our displaced persons have been resettled with dignity, which has become a point of reference,” he said. This achievement demonstrates the state’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and promoting sustainable recovery.

Dimanche commended Governor Buni for his leadership and dedication to the cause of displaced persons. “It takes a leader with a special heart to show such great concern to the resettlement of displaced persons with dignity,” she stated. The IOM Chief of Mission reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to partnering with the Yobe State Government to improve the lives of the people, particularly those affected by displacement.
