Nigerian Air Force Reaffirms Commitment to Fighting Terrorism with New Helicopters

Insecurity: Nigerian Air Force to fast-track delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper helicopters - Air Marshal Abubakar

In a significant boost to its counter-terrorism efforts, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to effectively deploying its air assets against terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements. This comes as the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Abubakar, led a high-level delegation to the United States for a critical meeting on acquiring 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.

The goal, as outlined by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, is to create lasting peace while protecting innocent lives and property. This will be achieved in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement, ensuring that the NAF operates with responsibility and integrity. Air Marshal Abubakar’s visit to the US included a firsthand inspection of the helicopters and discussions with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps. The focus was on understanding best practices for operating, sustaining, and supporting the AH-1Z platform.

“This visit has been invaluable in learning from the United States Marine Corps about the best ways to operate and maintain the AH-1Z helicopters,” Air Marshal Abubakar noted. He also expressed his deep gratitude to the US Government for its ongoing strategic partnership with Nigeria. The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters is expected to significantly enhance the NAF’s combat capabilities, making it more effective in its mission to safeguard the nation.

Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized the importance of expediting the procurement process, ensuring that these critical air assets are delivered and integrated into the NAF’s operations as quickly as possible. “We are fully committed to facilitating a smooth and efficient procurement and integration process,” he stated, underscoring the NAF’s determination to enhance its operational efficiency and mission readiness. This development marks a crucial step forward in the NAF’s efforts to bolster its capabilities and protect the nation against emerging security threats.
