In a bid to maintain peace and stability, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced plans to sanction radio stations operating in the state that defy the broadcasting code. This move comes after concerns were raised over incitement to violence and repeated breaches of the code by some radio stations. The governor warned that anyone found culpable of promoting violence will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.
According to a statement signed by Olawale Rasheed, the governor’s spokesperson, some radio stations have allowed guests to make inflammatory statements capable of causing unrest. These stations have also been accused of denying fair hearing to affected individuals, violating professional standards. The governor described these actions as “dangerous and a threat to peace and stability in the state.”
In response to these concerns, Governor Adeleke has directed the Commissioner for Information to summon the General Managers of the affected radio stations immediately. This move is seen as a prelude to more serious actions if the violations continue unchecked. While emphasizing the importance of press freedom, the governor stressed that it must be guided by responsibility and ethics.
The governor also warned opposition politicians against inciting violence over the recent Appeal Court ruling. He accused them of attempting to take the law into their hands through provocative public statements. “Anyone found promoting violence will be dealt with by law enforcement agencies,” the governor warned.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Command has deployed personnel across local government secretariats in the state to forestall a breakdown of law and order. This deployment follows the Appeal Court Akure Division judgment of Thursday, June 12, 2025, which has led to conflicting claims of control over council areas by local government executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the deployment, stating that the police are committed to providing security and ensuring safety in the state. “Our deployment has been done, and I urge the people of Osun State to go about their business,” he said. As tensions rise in the state, the governor’s warning and the police deployment aim to maintain peace and stability, ensuring that the rule of law is upheld.
