A recent surge in violence has hit the Umunnochi local government area of Abia State, Nigeria, resulting in a number of fatalities. The attacks, which were carried out by bandits in communities within the Isuochi region, have prompted a swift response from the state government. Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu addressed the situation, confirming that security breaches had indeed occurred and led to loss of life.
Kanu’s statement came after an executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti at the Government House in Umuahia. He assured the public that the state’s security agencies have been placed on high alert and that every measure will be taken to address the security issues. “The State security agencies have been put on full alert as the state government would not leave any stone unturned in activating the entire security architecture of the state to address the issue of security breaches,” Kanu emphasized. This resolve is in line with Governor Otti’s commitment to ensuring that no part of the state falls under criminal control.
In addition to addressing the immediate security concerns, the Abia State government also provided updates on public health and development initiatives. Commissioner Kanu announced that the state is currently free from outbreaks of diphtheria, Mpox, cholera, and Lassa fever, highlighting the government’s efforts to maintain public health. Furthermore, he revealed that over 91,000 individuals have enrolled in the Abia State Social Health Insurance Scheme, a program aimed at improving access to healthcare for the state’s residents.
The government is also pushing forward with infrastructural development, with plans to launch four new housing estates in locations including Mgbarakuna, Obehie, Mbaisi, and Valley View. These projects aim to provide more housing options and contribute to the overall development of the state. Despite the recent security challenges, the Abia State government appears committed to moving forward with its agenda, focusing on both the safety of its citizens and the advancement of the state’s infrastructure and social services.
