Abia State Unveils 25 Year Master Plan for Greater Aba and Invests in Infrastructure and Healthcare Development

Abia State Unveils Ambitious 25-Year Master Plan for Greater Aba

In a significant move to transform the commercial city of Aba, the Abia State Government has announced the upcoming launch of a comprehensive 25-year Greater Aba Master Plan. This long-term blueprint, designed in collaboration with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), aims to guide the development and transformation of the city. According to Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu, the plan focuses on four key pillars: road infrastructure and connectivity, economic development, sustainable urban expansion, and flood management.

The master plan is a product of a collaborative effort between the Greater Aba Development Authority and UN-Habitat, with the goal of addressing the land use infrastructure and communication goals of the authority. The four pillars of the plan are designed to work together to create a comprehensive and sustainable development strategy for the city. The first pillar, road infrastructure, includes transportation, development, and connectivity within Aba. The second pillar will focus on economic development, including industrial zones, upgrades, and formalization of commercial hubs. The third pillar will address sustainable development and planned urban expansion, while the fourth pillar will focus on terrestrial resilience and flood management, a perennial problem in the city.

In addition to the master plan, the Abia State Government has made significant progress in other areas, including healthcare and education. The government has inaugurated three additional Primary Health Centres (PHCs) as part of the 17 completed PHCs under the Project Ekwueme Scheme, with a fourth PHC set to be inaugurated on June 20. The state’s health insurance scheme has also seen encouraging enrollment numbers, with 91,227 people currently enrolled. Furthermore, a new Intensive Care Unit has become operational in Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Hospital, significantly enhancing emergency medical response and specialized surgeries.

The government has also made notable progress in education, with hostel renovations at Abia State University nearing completion and staff recruitment set to commence in critical academic areas. Projects such as internal roads construction, library upgrades, and auditorium retrofitting are ongoing at Abia State College of Education Technical, Arochukwu, as part of the administration’s agenda to support course accreditation efforts and elevate education in institutions of higher learning.

Governor Alex Otti has received commendations for his efforts in rebuilding roads and other infrastructure across the state. However, the commissioner acknowledged recent security breaches and expressed the government’s resolve to address the situation with a robust response. Security agencies are on high alert to ensure peace and security are sustained across the state.

As Abia State embarks on this ambitious development plan, it is clear that the government is committed to creating a better future for its citizens. With a focus on sustainable development, economic growth, and improved infrastructure, the 25-year Greater Aba Master Plan has the potential to transform the city and set a positive example for other states in Nigeria. As the plan unfolds, it will be exciting to see the impact it has on the lives of Abia State residents and the region as a whole.
