Israel Launches Airlift Operation to Bring Home Stranded Citizens
In a significant development, Israel has initiated a phased airlift operation to repatriate its citizens stranded abroad, with the first flight landing safely in Tel Aviv on Wednesday morning. This move comes after tens of thousands of Israelis were left stranded in various countries following Israel’s pre-dawn attack on Iran last Friday, which resulted in the closure of airspace across the Middle East.
The nearest European Union member state to Israel, Cyprus, has become a hub for Israelis seeking to return home. Many have converged on the island, with some arriving from as far as Hungary, Rome, Georgia, and New York. According to Cyprus’ Chief Rabbi, Arie Zeev Raskin, "All people who are on the way ended up here with the hope that since Larnaca and Paphos are the closest neighbors of Israel, once the flights will begin, that will be the first shuttle to go." The city of Larnaca, in particular, has played a crucial role, with the first repatriation flight carrying passengers from there to Tel Aviv, a mere 50-minute journey.
Initially, 2,400 passengers aboard Israel-bound flights were stranded on the island after their aircraft were abruptly diverted last week. However, since then, more have arrived, seeking to catch a flight back home. One such individual is Yossi Levitan, who is eager to reunite with his eight children and one grandchild in Ramla, 30 kilometers south of Tel Aviv. "We are waiting for the moment when we can return," he said. "In the meantime, we are helping in any way we can the people who are stuck here in Larnaca."
Repatriation flights are reportedly also scheduled from other major cities, including Athens, Rome, Milan, Paris, Budapest, and London. As the situation continues to unfold, Israel’s airlift operation is expected to bring relief to thousands of its citizens stranded abroad. The successful landing of the first flight in Tel Aviv marks a significant step towards reuniting families and restoring a sense of normalcy for those affected by the recent events. As the world watches, Israel’s efforts to bring its citizens home safely will undoubtedly be closely monitored, highlighting the importance of international cooperation and diplomacy in times of crisis.
