Nasarawa State Government Threatens to Shut Down Mining Companies Over Environmental and Social Responsibility Violations

Nasarawa govt threatens to shut mining companies over negligence in community responsibility

In a bold move to protect the environment and public health, the Nasarawa State Government has issued a stern warning to mining companies operating within its borders. The government has threatened to shut down any company that fails to meet its community social responsibilities and adhere to environmental safety standards. This warning comes after concerns were raised about the use of mercury, a highly toxic chemical, in mining processes, with waste allegedly being discharged into the Uke River.

The Uke River, a vital water source for local residents and wildlife, has become a focal point of concern. Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Margaret Itake Elayo, expressed her alarm over the reports, stating, “This river is life to many people and animals. If harmful substances are truly being released into it, then it is unacceptable.” She emphasized the government’s responsibility to protect both life and the environment, adding, “Profits cannot come at the cost of human health.”

During an inspection of mining sites along the Uke River, Elayo and her team collected water samples for laboratory analysis and summoned key stakeholders in the mining sector to address the allegations. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection and public health, warning that any company found violating regulations will be shut down. The commissioner also criticized mining companies for failing to invest in the development of their host communities, urging them to take community social responsibility seriously by building schools, clinics, and offering educational scholarships.

Elayo stressed that mining companies must give back to the people who host them, saying, “It is not enough to extract resources and leave communities underdeveloped.” She warned that companies that do not meet their obligations will have their licenses reviewed or suspended. The government’s inspection team also visited Saka, another area in Karu, where residents are facing the growing threat of gully erosion. The government has pledged to assess and address the environmental risk in the affected area, demonstrating its commitment to protecting the environment and public health.

The Nasarawa State Government’s strong stance on environmental protection and community development serves as a reminder that companies have a responsibility to operate in a way that benefits both their bottom line and the communities they serve. As the government continues to monitor the situation and take action against non-compliant companies, it is clear that the protection of the environment and public health will remain a top priority.
