Civil Society Group Commends Arraignment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for Criminal Defamation

Natasha: Truth must prevail over theatrics - CSO reacts to senator's arraignment

The recent arraignment of Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on charges of criminal defamation and malicious falsehood has been commended by the Centre for Justice and Institutional Integrity (CJII), a civil society group. The group emphasizes that truth must prevail over theatrics in a society governed by laws, and that justice should outweigh publicity stunts.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case stems from her public allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which the CJII claims are unsubstantiated and have been propagated without evidence. The group notes that despite her sensationalist media appearances, no credible documentation, witness testimony, or investigative findings have emerged to support her claims. In contrast, Senator Akpabio has continued to focus on national governance and leadership, allowing due process to take its course.

The charges against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan were brought by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, and her arraignment marks a significant shift in the controversy surrounding her accusations. The CJII views this trial as a long-overdue effort to uphold the dignity of public service and enforce accountability in the face of deliberate character assassination.

According to the CJII, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s accusations have not been supported by any credible evidence, and her actions have been aimed at damaging reputations for political gain. The group believes that as a public figure, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan must now face the legal consequences of her words and provide proof for the grievous claims she has made.

The presiding judge, Justice Chizoba Orji, has fixed September 23, 2025, for the commencement of the trial. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N50 million, with one surety required to own landed property within the FCT jurisdiction.

The CJII’s statement emphasizes that this trial sends a clear message: in a society governed by laws, truth must prevail over theatrics, and justice must outweigh publicity stunts. The group views this as a crucial step towards upholding the dignity of public service and enforcing accountability, and believes that leadership must not be held hostage by baseless slander. As the trial approaches, it remains to be seen how Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan will respond to the charges and whether she will be able to provide evidence to support her claims.
