A high-profile court case in Nigeria has taken a significant turn, as Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has adjourned the proceedings until September 26, 2025. The case involves Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu ThankGod, also known as Eezee Tee, a prominent music promoter and former manager of renowned gospel artist Mercy Chinwo. ThankGod and his company, Eezee Global Concepts Limited, are facing a seven-count amended charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges against ThankGod and his company allege foreign exchange malpractice and money laundering, involving several hundred thousand dollars. One of the key allegations is that ThankGod, not being an authorized foreign exchange dealer approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria, negotiated a foreign currency transaction with an individual, violating provisions of the Foreign Exchange Monitoring and Miscellaneous (Provisions) Act.
The case has been ongoing, with ThankGod initially arraigned before Justice Owoeye at the same court. However, it was later reassigned to Justice Aneke for continuation of proceedings. During the recent hearing, the prosecution, led by Bilkisu Buhari-Bala, presented its first witness, Mohammed Timta. The defense counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, informed the court that both parties were close to reaching a settlement and requested additional time to finalize discussions. If the negotiations fail, the prosecution will proceed with a full trial.
Justice Aneke granted the request, adjourning the case to September 26, 2025, for further hearing. This development marks a significant milestone in the case, as the court awaits the outcome of the settlement negotiations between the parties involved. The adjournment provides an opportunity for both sides to engage in further discussions, potentially leading to a resolution without the need for a full trial. As the case continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether a settlement will be reached or if the prosecution will proceed with a full trial, shedding more light on the allegations of foreign exchange malpractice and money laundering.
