Benue: Ex-convict, not herdsmen behind Wannune shooting - Police

A recent surge in viral social media reports claimed that a herdsmen attack had occurred in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area, but the Benue State Police Command has stepped in to set the record straight. According to the police, no such incident took place. Instead, the incident in question was an isolated shooting that had no connection to any herdsmen activity.

On June 21, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m., police received a distress call reporting a fatal shooting along Akume Road in Wannune. The victim, Aondoakaa Yayough, lost his life in the incident. Detectives were promptly dispatched to the scene to investigate. Preliminary investigations and eyewitness accounts have identified the shooter as Saater Aii, an ex-convict. Although local security operatives initially apprehended him, he managed to escape, and a search is currently underway to track him down.

The incident also resulted in two other individuals sustaining gunshot injuries, and they were rushed to the hospital for treatment. An AK-47 rifle used in the attack was recovered at the scene, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation. The police are working tirelessly to apprehend the suspect and bring him to justice.

DSP Udeme Edet, the Police Public Relations Officer, emphasized that “there was no report of herdsmen in Wannune,” debunking the misleading and false claims circulating on social media. He urged the public to exercise caution when sharing information and to rely on official and credible sources for updates. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information before sharing it, as unverified reports can cause unnecessary panic and confusion.
